To change things up a bit I found the two most jacked dudes that I know in @mattyp and @zacharyvalles, sat them down on a bench in front of a squat rack and talked about peptide tasting and startup events in 2026.
You won't find three dudes talking about technology on a podcast anywhere else.

I have picked a side
SPEAKER_02You're listening to a very special episode of Members of Technical Staff. It is July 1st, so naturally I've had to pick a side. And I've gone with the dudes. I'm gone with the dudes. Isn't that a way to start? There goes all the women audience. Uh it is what it is. I've got Matt Palmer and I've got 15% of them.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04Oh, 15%.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Okay. So the the law on 50% the reason why Zach says 15% is because the last time I checked the gender breakdown of the creatine cycle audience, it was 85% men and 15% women. Now, that's a that's an increase, right? Right? It's actually an increase in in women from like 98.2. Uh so that's substantial, right? We've done a little bit of work uh and you know, I've sort of realied myself or some shit. Um anyway. Uh we're gonna drive that number down.
SPEAKER_04We're going for 90 ten.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_04Just like our beef. Exactly right, exactly.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, 9010, yeah. 93.7, a little lean beef, you know? 96.4 from Trader Jones. Don't mind if we do, don't mind if we do. We'll see. We'll see. Have you seen the price of whey protein recently?
SPEAKER_01Unreal. Unreal. Kind of insane, right? It's like like proper whey protein shortages. I liked it better when nobody cared about fitness.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I could just get creatine and whey for dirt cheap. Like they were just giving the stuff away. It was like free.
SPEAKER_02And you know what? Those that are taken, they still look normal. What's up with that? Bit of a drive-by. Uh anyway, so and we'll actually we'll actually touch on this. We'll actually touch on this because um, as the audience may have guessed, we're gonna be talking about startup events in 2026, right? So directly related to whatever that intro was. And, you know, because the reason I wanted to actually talk about this is because I just think things have gotten a little uh I'm gonna I'm gonna go ahead and say it, out of hand. I think the events have gotten a bit out of hand. Well, from what I've seen over the last couple of weeks, um I I mean, uh actually uh uh uh Fort is not in is not what I consider to be out of hand. I really liked Fort Pilates. And and I will and I will make a mention of that. I I believe I've got it in my preparation somewhere.
SPEAKER_04Oh it's off Twitter, right? It's Pilates is mostly female dominated. So natural. Almost anti-Twitter.
SPEAKER_02It's just not there. It doesn't go viral on Twitter, you know. It's on Luma, we didn't actually advertise it, turns out we still had a full house. They were all normal. Yeah. Uh yeah, I mean, yeah, not exactly great for the Twitter Artie, but you know, I think to get started here, I'm thinking
Types of startup events in 2026: Happy Hours
SPEAKER_02of the types of startup events in 2026. Right? There's been there's been a few of them. Uh off the top of my head, off the top of my head, you still have the happy hours. I'd say happy hours are still going strong. Matt, I'm sure you've been to a few happy hours uh this year.
SPEAKER_01I've been to many happy hours, yeah. I just feel like I go to like three happy hours a week. But that's that's part of developer relations, you know, you show up to things. Right, right. That is part of uh uh developing relationships with developers. Yes. And now, you know, with AI, everybody's a developer, so it's just relations. Oh, I've been told this actually, so I just I just relate to people actually. That's all I do for my work. That's actually good. Thanks. I I'm I'm working on these bits, you know. Just gotta get the one-liners in there. So try my best. So you're just a relationship guy. That's right, yeah. Okay. Somebody called me a fitness influencer the other day. I don't know where that came from, but you know, uh you did tell me this. You sent me a text very, very proudly. I was excited about that. I fucking would be. The entire career basically has been a psyop of getting into tech and then sharing my fitness with tech people to just get into fitness.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So we're completing the cycle.
SPEAKER_02We're getting there. Totally. I'm working on my like my fitness SF sponsorship and my David Protein Bar sponsorship. I mean, I mean, I you didn't hear it from me. You didn't hear it from me. Uh except I'm gonna leave it in and put it on the internet.
SPEAKER_01So I guess he did. Not to not to get too sidetracked, but what is in those, like the ratio, the macro ratios on that is like almost sus. Like, I'm like, how is there so much protein and so little other things in this protein bar? I I mean, do you have any thoughts, Zach? Ask David.
SPEAKER_00Haven't seen it.
SPEAKER_02It's just pure like it was right there. What? Yeah, yeah. I'll call him after this. I mean, have you been to many happy hours? I mean, you've been kind of locked in this year doing YC, etc.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's been a very Chinese time in my life. Uh he's been in China. Been in China with suppliers. Uh they're big fans of happy hours over there. Oh uh I have to kind of pace myself because the the drinking is very culturally significant there. Uh when I come to San Francisco, it's like a nice detox. Yeah. Because no one drinks. Even at the happy hours. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say it's a forcible detox.
Drinking at startup events
SPEAKER_02Actually, you know what? I um I actually had drinking at startup events as like a topic. You know, I think we should just we I think we should just jump into this here because we've gone, I've gone types of startup events, happy hours, drinking. Happy hours you would think involve drinking. A lot of happy hours in SF do not, even though they're held at bars and those sorts of things. Um I have a tweet here from Paul Graham, and I forget what it was. And so we're just gonna we're just gonna read it. We're just gonna read it and react to it together.
@paulg reaction
SPEAKER_02Uh, but he says, uh, this was from September last year, says apparently people in the SF Bay area have stopped drinking. I heard about one big social event that made half as much from drinks in 2025 as in 2024. So even even big Paul G is noticing the trend, and it's still trending down. I I mean I was here in 2024, you're here in 2024, you're also here in 2024. I didn't think it could trend down much from that. It's gotten worse. Somehow.
SPEAKER_01So now the counting cultural the countercultural thing to do is just to be a drunk. Just get blasted. Yeah, so if you're if you consider yourself an independent thinker, you're getting hammered. Yeah. Exactly right. Thank you. Thursday happy hours at 8 p.m.
SPEAKER_02Thursday. Talk about Monday. Get out of here. It's funny you say that, you know. Um my my drinking night in college was Tuesdays.
SPEAKER_04I mine was too, actually. Yeah. Right. Yeah. I would come home from from uh engineering exams and my roommates would have four shots of tequila lined up for me.
SPEAKER_02Um it really jumpstarted the night. Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm sure. I mean, because I I went to music school, like we would uh we would go, like a friend and I, we would go finish an entire bottle of wine and then go to the practice rooms.
SPEAKER_04There is some performance enhancement if you can make an argument for that. Yes. Because music is a very social thing.
SPEAKER_02So for me, it was charisma in the practice room's halls. Just talking to people. Being like, hey, I've been drinking. Like kind of kind of flexing it actually. It was actually kind of strange.
SPEAKER_04I'm a bit of a musician after a bottle of wine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, I don't mind if I do. Yeah, yeah, call myself a creative. Um, another friend of the show, Celeste Amadon, she actually replied to
@Celesteamadon reaction
SPEAKER_02Paul. She was like, My startup known sent a thousand people on dates this summer in SF. And this is true. We started charging a cover for dating events because people were averaging less than one drink. Seems concerning. Seems concerning. I'll tell you what, it couldn't be a MOTS event. Uh I think I'd say every every MOT's event that I've thrown, like we've we've actually run out of alcohol.
SPEAKER_04What's your go-to alcohol?
SPEAKER_02Uh for MOT's events or for me personally? Both. So for MOTS events, I mean, we've got to stack the high noons, we've gotta stack the vodka. Um what else did we stack? I mean, like modellos. Like I mean, like pretty pretty stock standard. Pretty stock standard. Just get your standard spirits, modellos, high noons, uh, some Red Bulls in there, and just let people go for gold. Um and and you know, like a like a few bottles of wine, a few bottles of wine for like the photo booth. For the girlies in the photo booth, right? All that sort of thing. Um for me personally, for me personally, I have recently been into vodka soda like. I was dude, I'd fucking do that. There is like I was like, this guy's gonna say vodka soda.
SPEAKER_01Nine percent body fat, by the way.
SPEAKER_04All roads, all roads lead to vodka sodas. They actually are like women do have it figured out in some respect. Of course. Stair stepping, yeah. I've recently got into this activity at the gym. Yeah. Uh immaculate uh effort relative to like low impact, really good cardio, vodka soda, high impact, low calorie. They know what they're doing. We should be following them.
SPEAKER_02Why do you think Mott's does what it does, right? It's been trying to figure all of this out, right? This is San Francisco culture. You can't have San Francisco culture if it's just the men talking about it, like we're doing right now. Um, you know, but that's why it's a rarity, right? It's a it's a it's a special privilege to have three males uh on on members of technical staff podcasts sitting on a bench in front of a squad, right? I don't mind if I do. I mean, I mean, that's that's took the words right out of my mouth. Okay, so continuing on here, continuing on here, um, I wanted to continue with the types of startup events. Because we need, of course, we needed to address the drinking, right? I mean, that's like the drinking problem in that it's not a problem, right? Which it's which in itself is a problem, right? That's what we've addressed.
SPEAKER_04The U-shaped curve. Yeah, yeah. The correct exam the correct uh city is to be found somewhere in the center.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yes, yes, like the U-shape. That's there, the upside down midwitter, right? Yeah, I mean I I think I think that makes sense. I think that makes sense. Uh okay, so I just wanted to take a moment here after six glasses of wine to introduce the newest sponsor. Langfuse. Langfuse is the number one uh open source LLM op product there to help you continuously uh improve your uh AI application. Right? Prompt management, uh observability, observability comes with tracing, all of these different sorts of things. You can actually do it with uh LangFuse. I'm very, very happy to uh have them on board with me because they are awesome. And then the founder already invited me to his wedding. Uh so to that I say I don't really know. But you should use Lang Fuse, and if you don't, you're
Are hackathons dead? Treehacks and @cdngdev shoutout
SPEAKER_02a fucking idiot in regards to other types of startup events, other types of startup events. I mean you have your hackathons, right? Just tried and true is what it is, right? Honestly, I've actually not seen as many hackathons this year. Like maybe, maybe how like um how's the smell gate kind of ruined it for a bit.
SPEAKER_01I was wondering if you're gonna bring that up. I was like, I'm not bringing that up, I'm staying away from that. Yeah. And that's probably right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I mean, like, I mean, you had tree hacks. You were down at Tree Hacks. I was at Tree Hacks, yes. You were not at tree hacks? I was very sick. Yes. I was very sick. You were not at tree hacks, you were.
SPEAKER_01How was that? It was cool. Uh a lot of students, you know. Good to see what the youth are cooking up. Uh shout out Tice. Awesome dude. Absolutely, absolutely.
SPEAKER_02Just like like absolute warrior, I think, now at OpenAI. Uh like good for him.
YC events
SPEAKER_02Good for him. Uh YC events.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02YC events.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, there's uh there's a lot of YC events in San Francisco. Yeah. It's almost like YC is here. Yeah, yeah. Actually checks out. I saw a YC event uh in Amsterdam, I think it was. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah, that was interesting.
SPEAKER_02Fair, like fair fucks to them, as we say in Australia.
SPEAKER_04Bringing acceleration to Europe. Yes. Where it's needed. Yeah, yeah. There's too much of it here.
SPEAKER_02It's uh it's a big ask. It's a big ask. I mean, uh, I think the last YC event, so I I was at demo day uh in December last year. So I've not been to any of the demo days this year. But demo day in December last year, and I remember there was like there was some um there was just some like after party thing in at the top of the Hilton, actually. Uh seemed kind of cool. Like Friends of the Show Fondo, like he was uh he like David Phillips was just like running a podcast up there and like live streaming the event. It was all it was all kind of interesting. It was all kind of interesting. It was like like he had sort of like JP Morgan startups sponsoring it. I'm like, I didn't even know I didn't even know JP Morgan had like a startup service.
SPEAKER_04They actually I I saw them shut down a portion of the town a few months back. I think this was in uh February, March. They had a huge event. I don't know what exactly it was, but I saw multiple buildings cornered off for parties with JP Morgan. Really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, they seem like a lot more fun to party with, if I'm being completely honest. JP Morgan hit me up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if you need a relationship guy. I'm here for relations.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Public developer to develop relations, investor relations, that's another thing. Yeah, I can pivot. Yes. Jack of all trades.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I wanted to now get into a couple of the more controversial ones. Um before before I do though, I do want to give a shout out to Circleback AI. Um, just like newer smot sponsor, newer smot sponsor. So naturally, I'm just gonna sell it to the boys here on the bench. Uh, but basically, your company brain making meetings memorable again, right? You can you can get like they they transcribe your entire meeting. It's actually quite nice. It's actually quite nice. You can set up follow-up emails, automations, all those sorts of things. When I have a meeting, circle back joins, and then it actually drafts the follow-up email for me based on how the meeting went. Actually kind of useful. Actually, kind of useful. It's actually now available in Apple Watch. I don't know if you saw that recently. Yes.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Wow.
SPEAKER_02You're doing the fucking ad for me.
SPEAKER_04I I would serve the ad. I have to relate it.
SPEAKER_02Everything with Apple Watch I know of. Totally, totally. I mean, and Mots listeners can go to circleback.aslash Mots for 60 days free for you and your team. So there you go. Apologies for the value. Sorry for the value. Okay, so I want to get into a couple of the more controversial examples. Um well, this one's actually not controversial, but I want to bring it up first. Uh Andrew from New York, Andrew Young, I think that's probably how you pronounce it. Sorry, I'm a white guy.
@andruyeung startup comedy show
SPEAKER_02Uh he's he meant startup comedy show last night in New York was wild. 200 people came out for it. In true tech fashion, there was even a guy bent over his laptop coding in the room. Don't know why he needed to add that sentence there, but you know, but but you know, the reason I bring this up is because we actually had friends of the show involved. So um, son of Allie, Ali from Verse. Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02So she was she was there. I mean Ali's hilarious. That's a that's a great get. Um another friend of the show, Dan Toomey from Goodwork. Hell yeah, yeah. He was a part of it. Of course, of course. Like, like, and you know, I I would say he is a friend of the show. He was actually he actually messaged me, and it was a bit of a dry bone here, but he actually messaged me the other day asking me for an arm workout. What I do for arms. It was like, mate, straight barbell curls. And I said that during Pride Month too. So it's not to be confused with the easy bar. So there's that, there's that. Any thoughts? I didn't really get that joke, so I just kind of pretend like I need you to dig, I need to double click on that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's that's fair enough, that's fair enough. And we'll continue on. It's actually it's actually a bit of a tangent anyway.
SPEAKER_04So Pride Arm Day. Easy bar.
SPEAKER_01It's a clear trajectory. How did you not get this? We can move. Clearly, I'm not I'm not qualified for the comedy show.
SPEAKER_00No, it's fine.
SPEAKER_02If you have to explain a joke, I mean it's it's just kind of fucking over. It's my fault. It's my fault. Um, but we're doing startup comedy shows, which is interesting. Um, another really interesting event that happened just recently, actually.
SPEAKER_01Actually, here's a question. Yes. I that startup comedy show, when you mentioned it, I was like, oh, this sounds like the most cringe thing imaginable. But then you talked about the lineup and the fact that it was in New York, and I was like, this actually sounds kind of cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I feel like if that was in San Francisco, it would have been the most cringe thing imaginable. Yep. Yep. I think that's I think that's right.
SPEAKER_02I think that's generally right. I mean, it's it's it's it just turns out like it's like, oh, startup event NYC. It's like the Japan meme, you know, it's like thing and then thing Japan. And then it's like, no, the the guy being excited. Startup event, startup event NYC. Or startup event SF versus startup event NYC.
SPEAKER_04Have either of you been to a comedy show in SF? Never.
SPEAKER_02Uh I have, yeah.
SPEAKER_04How did you find it and had how would you compare it if you could to New York if you did?
SPEAKER_01Uh well, I haven't been to a comedy show in New York, but I've again been to comedy shows elsewhere. The comedy show here was okay, like the comedians was alright. I've been to much better comedy shows.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I've found I found a comedy shout out, Cobbs. I love Cobbs, but uh I it's a little lackluster.
SPEAKER_04I feel like it I think in 20, maybe 2010, it would have been pretty hopping. And then the wokeism, I think, nerfed the comedy scene, and a lot of the people got frustrated and left to other cities that were more based cities, more right-wing cities. Yeah. But hopefully there's a trajectory facing uh San Francisco to bring more based comics back.
SPEAKER_02There's like like I I think woke three has room for it, right? Like we've already been through woke two. Yeah. Uh woke three, I think, will bring comedy back.
SPEAKER_04It's controversial now.
SPEAKER_02Yes, exactly, exactly. Rent is high, everybody's making money again. I mean, that that kind of makes sense to me. Kind of makes sense to me. Um
Peptide tasting event
SPEAKER_02speaking of controversial, uh the I think the talk of the town probably a couple of weeks ago was the peptide tasting event. Did it I'm guessing neither of you guys went?
SPEAKER_04No, I actually had a chance to go. You went? I went, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay, well, I mean, before I get into the posts, uh, thoughts, thoughts generally high level.
SPEAKER_04High level, we had a few peptides that were topically or orally available that were shown and given samples to the people. I thought it was an interesting mix of folks that probably don't have a lot of experience with peptides, a lot of those folks. It was our first experience for most people. Um it's it's because of the availability, I would say. You know, a lot of people are not, there's a few folks that have inroads to these supplement companies that are definitely not based in the US. Um, some of them maybe starting to be. Yes. Um, but if you know a guy that knows a guy, then you're on peptides allegedly. And maybe you can tell. I I I don't know. I I've seen some really impressive transformations with some of these peptides. And I'm I'm curious, but the the thing is I just don't know a guy. Yeah. So I was there, I put BPC 157 on my tongue, and I I said, hmm, interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you feel healed? You know, I can't, I it's complicated because I actually I'm coming back from an injury right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I've been doing a lot of yoga and rehabilitation at the same time. So that it's hard to isolate whether that's been doing it for me or the BPC's been doing it for me, but I did feel better. Yeah. So, end of one study, I guess it works.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, I mean, whatever works for me is is good, and whatever doesn't work, like for whatever doesn't work for others is map bad. That's it's that's actually how these things work. I mean, yeah, I'm guessing you didn't go.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_02I was nowhere near that. Oh, give me a date, bro. I don't know. I don't know when this was. Yeah, but I'm I'm you know, like I was um, I I mean I personally was very, very impressed with the turnout. Um obviously I I had other plans, but I forget what it what it was. Um something important. Something important, something important. I'm also just like, you know, obviously uh my whole brand, like obviously, you know, partner with superpower.com, which you know, we are we are like aligned-ish on this, in that it should be done rarely and safely. Um the the promotion of this sort of thing in the form of a startup event, I think, is bad. I'm actually gonna say it. I'm actually gonna say it. I think it's bad. Uh you know, just like handing out like unregulated compounds to those that don't know any better.
SPEAKER_01What you're saying is that foreign substances from an unknown manufacturer, it's bad to just ingest those randomly. Yes. Or to inject them into your body. That's a bit of a crazy take. I just want to put it out there. Just like putting things in your body that you don't know what they are. Yeah, yeah, and being against that.
SPEAKER_00Pretty crazy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's novel. Breaking the ground here.
unknownI don't know, man.
SPEAKER_02None of these, I saw I I I bet none of those motherfuckers had been on bodybuilding.com. None of them. Or maybe like four of them. I mean, I'm sure Jeff has. Yeah. I mean, I'm I'm certain
@jefftangx reaction
SPEAKER_02Jeff has, right? I want to actually pull up Jeff's um, you know, and Jeff is a friend of the show. So I'm while I might be ideologically opposed, I think two things can be true. You can be friends with people you disagree with on such topics.
SPEAKER_01That's another crazy take. I don't I don't know why I'm on this show, dude. The fuck is this? Dor. The door's right there.
SPEAKER_02Um but he said, he said, so this was uh June 24th. So the date was June 23rd, you're asking for a date. He said, last night in SF I hosted the world's largest peptide polycule. Okay. Choice words. Yeah. Okay. Um and yeah. Of course, in the you know, he's quote tweeting himself, right, talking about how he was hosting a peptide tasting party, and you know, has the uh that I'm sure in the image there is the uh oral BPC. So for those listening, it is essentially like a square tab on somebody's tongue, and that is how people were able to quote unquote taste the peptides, quote unquote taste these things.
SPEAKER_04How to peppermint taste, I will say. It was nice, it was lovely. I actually did taste like that. I I noted that if there were if there were these peptide strips available in the office, I would just eat them like snacks.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. You'd just be just be you'd just be healing. I would be so healed. Incredibly healed. Did uh was it just um was it just BPC that you were able to taste?
SPEAKER_04No, there was um there was G uh G HK. That's the skin one, right? It's a couple one. Yeah. Uh and it was kind of in like a lotion format. So you would put it on, and then if you were adventurous, you would. This is associated with a startup. This is the highest risk thing I've ever heard, like as a liability perspective.
SPEAKER_01This is insane. You have to sign a waiver. You signed a waiver. Oh, there's a waiver, okay.
SPEAKER_04And strangely enough, I don't know if this was associated with the party, but there was an ambulance that was right outside the line.
SPEAKER_02If anyone right outside the line. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04And I was thinking, huh. If someone Was to have a horrible allergic reaction, it would be fine.
SPEAKER_03Because the ambulance is right there. EpiPen, pass it up.
SPEAKER_01Throw it over the wall. It's easy. Actually, you're right. I'm just not creative enough. Like, I'm not doing enough marketing here. You know, you gotta step it up.
SPEAKER_02You know, either that or it's like I am just like, I am just a closed-minded cuck. You know? Like, I mean, I I've been saying for the last probably couple of months that I think uh San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area probably needs maybe 2x less openness. Maybe I'm just fucking wrong. Maybe I'm just wrong. And like I need to explore my own body more. They have drugs for that. At the party. At the party. Um actually on this, and I and I will overlay this, but I I actually I I now on this topic I recall a post. There was like a VC dinner essentially with like a menu of peptides. And you they you also had to sign a waiver. I will I will find it, I'll overlay it, but this is like funnily enough, the peptide tasting party is not the first to do this. These are all startup adjacent.
SPEAKER_01It just feels like this, it's like the same kind of LARP that like 996 grind culture is. People love like talking about this stuff, and it's like not the actual thing that produces the outcome. Of course. It's like just do the work or just like go to the gym, or like you don't need to talk about peptides. Easy gym. Easily gym.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I had a tweet this morning where it's like, you know, uh people in SF will have like the most insane peptide stacks just to look like kind of normal. Yeah. Um another one here
@DrewVento reaction
SPEAKER_02from DGen CPA, uh, he quote tweeted, and he was like, we need to nuke San Francisco. Okay, so that was, you know, obviously once this sort of thing uh escapes containment, especially on the timeline, that is the general sentiment, and it's actually the sentiment of a lot of events that happen in San Francisco, I would say. Especially the startup events, especially the ones in which they're talking about like either like LinkedIn or number of followers. I saw one the other day where it was like cumulative followers.
SPEAKER_04Just like across aggregated across all platforms.
SPEAKER_02So the post was along the lines of like, we threw a startup event last night. Um, those who attended had cumulatively over one million plus followers.
SPEAKER_04Oh. Aggregating your yes, the people that attend your parties, their followers.
SPEAKER_01And having measurements for it. Wow. Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's just, you know. I think I'd try to retroactively remove myself from the partiful for that event. I don't like I don't want to be on that list. Like, bro, take me out.
SPEAKER_03KPI, bro.
SPEAKER_01No, I don't want to be on the KPI.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it it all it starts to feel a little bit strivery. Not to say that Jeff's event was strivery in any way. I mean, I might be like, I might disagree with the mechanisms that are used at said events. I don't think Jeff came across as strivery at all. Um, but like it was just, you know, it's just another example of San Francisco startup events having interesting themes. That's all I'm gonna say. That's all I'm gonna say. Um last one I wanted to bring up in this uh in this program. I don't know why I just had to search for the word. Um but I wanted to make a mention
@haileyinsf reaction
SPEAKER_02to the Fort Pilates, right? Because I did actually have a post about this. Haley Kim says, Fort throws the best workout events. Shout out to Miranda Nova for hosting. You were also there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fort Cross Trust. Fort and Fort. Right? Fort's everywhere. The Fort Squat Rack, we're in the Fort office. Fort office. There you fucking go. There you fucking go. Um, you know, it was great. It was great. I heard it was great.
SPEAKER_04I heard it was great too. I wasn't there. Oh, you weren't? I was not there. No. The Pilates I haven't done Pilates actually.
SPEAKER_02I've never done Pilates either.
SPEAKER_04You know, this is uh something I've been I've always wanted to do Pilates. I've never gotten an invite to do Pilates. I think the the skewing of Pilates might actually have a higher uh ratio, inverse ratio than your show. Oh absolutely. It might be like 99% women. That's one of the reasons I want to do Pilates.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'll say it, dude.
SPEAKER_01That sounds like a fun dick. Oh, it's active, you're moving, you're talking about it.
SPEAKER_04I thought you were saying that you wanted to do Pilates because you wanted to be the first man. Like man on the moon type of thing.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that too, sure. I thought you were looking for like distribution, you know, like like increasing the TAM sort of thing for conductor or whatever. Two things can be true at once. Yeah, I mean, yeah, we can we can hold we can hold these beliefs simultaneously.
SPEAKER_04Build relationships, develop them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just develop relationships.
SPEAKER_02That's right. Yeah. I mean, I think I think it absolutely checks out. Absolutely checks out. Um, cool. So my next question, my next question, uh leading basically uh covering all of this is Okay, so I'm taking this opportunity here in uh this golf-driving bot that just stopped two blocks away from me and made me walk and is now speaking to me in a British accent. Right a disclaimer. Uh basically I wanted to give a shout out to Cappy AI, your agentic IDE. Rumors have it that Cappy's actually been building itself. So that is how agentic the damn thing is. And you can also make pull requests from Slack. So not only is it building itself, but the non-technicals are also able to contribute. So I'm not actually sure whether that's actually a great feature for it, but the fact is that the Cappy guys are cracked, and you'll actually probably see them on Matsoon, which is kind of fun. Uh so yeah, go ahead and check out cappy.ai. I am going to put the phone down before I get sick.
Everything is corporate sponsored
SPEAKER_02Everything now seems to be VC backed or corporate sponsored. Now, was it like this before? I actually don't think so. Not to this extent. That's what I'm gonna say. Now it's like every single dinner is VC backed, every single event's corporate sponsored. I mean, and I'm one to talk. I mean, I hosted a fucking jazz recital with like four different corporate sponsors. Um I personally think that's cool because naturally whatever I do is cool and whatever others do is bad. But still, I was able to reach out to a bunch of tech companies and essentially get that event sponsored. Right? I have friends who are trying to get their weddings sponsored. Corporate sponsored.
SPEAKER_04How is that expensive?
SPEAKER_02Um I guess if it if it does well on x.com the everything app, then it is right.
SPEAKER_04Right. I guess it could be like a huge networking event.
SPEAKER_02There you go. Most cursed wedding.
SPEAKER_01It's the ultimate networking event. Right.
SPEAKER_02The wedding, yeah, yeah, yeah. Absolutely, absolutely. And I guess there's beauty and novelty. But like, I mean, I know when I pitched corporate sponsors for the Jazz recital, like part of part of the pitch was, okay, you're gonna be sponsoring something cool and novel, but at the same time, it's gonna get a bunch of distribution online, right? It's gonna say, you know, it's gonna get tens of thousands of impressions when I go ahead and post stuff about it. Right, which I feel like is a fine uh it's a fine promise. It's a fine promise. The dinners. Right. Uh the dinners are interesting. Have you been to many of the VC dinners? You guys, both of them? Yes, many dinners. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like this year as well.
unknownMany dinners.
SPEAKER_01I don't want to I have I have a good time at the dinners. They're good dinners. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. They're very good dinners. I think good food. I was at a dinner last night.
unknownPretty good.
SPEAKER_01Excellent. The best food I've ever had. Dude, these are nice restaurants. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02And you get like the private room, right? I mean, a lot of the time.
SPEAKER_00Fucking hell.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I mean, I don't know. Go on. Tell us how they're bad. I'm not I'm not saying anything to get me uninvited to these dinners. That's all I gotta say. I'm not so again, so I'm definitely not saying that the VC dinners are bad. I'm just saying that um there seems to be more of them now than there were before. Right. I'm just noticing things in the culture, right? That is that is that is my job. Um, it's my fucking show. Um so, but I do want to bring up uh this post here from Jason Levin. And this was from
@iamjasonlevin reaction
SPEAKER_02uh April, right? So April 10, just a couple of months ago. And he says, right, it's a bit of a long one, so I'll speed read it here. We're in a tech dinner bubble. Every day I get invited to one to three tech dinners with F tier founders and investors. One of the invites even came from one of our vendors who is doing a terrible job. I had to literally tell him, stop inviting me to dinner and do the thing I pay you to do. It pissed me off so much. So the people hosting these events put some thought, more thought into it besides just hosting a dinner. Three examples I've done. Last week I rented out a movie theater to watch Instagram Reels last week and had famous influencers show up. It's kind of fun, I'd probably go to that. Um not the famous influencer part, I just really like Instagram reels. Uh in 2022, I rented out a bar for startups, VC and ping pong, and had 200 Tech New Yorkers playing ping pong. In 2023, I hosted a bug horror story night for Halloween, where engineers at major companies told bug horror stories. Put in literally an extra 30 seconds of thought about what people might have fun doing besides just eating. I'm telling you, it will be worth it. It doesn't have to be silly and viral like mine per se, but give people something more to do than food, a fun activity. Uh to the people like me getting uh invited to events, put some more thought into deciding what to go. Uh and then, you know, he talks about sort of like, you know, Sam Altman, he had this tweet years ago saying you can skip all the parties, all the conferences, all the press, all the tweets, build a great product and get users a win. Uh I think like in regards to Sam's tweet, I I think like all good things, it's the answer's probably somewhere in the middle.
SPEAKER_01Fully agreed. Well, so like the thing is if you do that and you have no friends, like number one, that's a very lonely road, and number two, it makes it much harder to get things done. Yeah. Because uh most of the fun I've had and just like good times working in the past two years in San Francisco has been from meeting people at parties and just like showing up to things. And so skip all the dinners, skip all the parties, like don't make any friends, that doesn't sound like a very fun way to do things.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean any any thoughts.
SPEAKER_04Sounds like a very 2015 tweet. Yeah. Before distribution was the moat.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's right, that's right. When you actually had to code stuff by hand, artisanally written code. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I like this tweet though, because it like it brings liveliness. I think it's a positive tweet in its core. Yeah. You know, it's aspire to greater. Yep. You know, you can do more than just the bare minimum.
SPEAKER_02Totally, totally. I I think we all agree here. I think we all agree. Um, let me see where are we going with this here now. I think what I will do is I will give a quick shout-out to uh Blackbox AI, Mozart's presenting sponsor. You know, it's just like one of those, one of those, one of those startups that's just growing exponentially, like all the coding agent startups are. Really, really good. These guys, however, um they do a bunch of push-ups and have maybe seals on their team. Who would have fucking thought? Who would have fucking thought? Basically, you can use them in the seal I, you can use them in the IDE, all of those sorts of things. Spin up your agents, you can use like slash auto, and it'll just pick the best model for the exact task that you're doing at that exact moment. Pretty good, right? Maybe Claude's actually better at reviewing the code now. I don't fucking know, I don't write code. Uh but basically, maybe Claude's actually good at that part, and maybe co maybe Codex is actually better at the writing part. Fable came out today, I would say it's probably the other way around, but slash auto will always pick the best model for the task. That's pretty cool. That's pretty cool. So you can do shit like that with them, and you know, the founders are cool and do push-ups. There you go, that's an ad read. Um so continuing on here, continuing on here.
Startup event ratios
SPEAKER_02I guess the next thing to talk about, and this is just like an age-old thing that is spoken about, and that is ratios at startup events. Ratios at startup events. Before I get into the tweets about it, do we have any higher-level thoughts without getting yourselves cancelled? We can go across the bench.
SPEAKER_04I think that the ratio is sort of a it it it you know my take on this, the Ford events so far have been really good. Yeah. And we're building a company that it has a lot of um diversity and we're building products for men and women alike. This obviously it helps that my fiance, the founder, the CEO, is a woman is a woman. Yeah, yeah, that does. And it also checks out that she's a woman. It speaks to more broadly how tech companies are almost 99% male founders. Yeah. Um, and I think that kind of ports down into the party dynamics. Yes. You know, because if you're trying to run a party, the the important things that are going to develop a good ratio are often not paid attention to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You know, like like the the types of you know, like like the a small detail would be not just buying the Kirkland seltzers and putting them out on the table lukewarm.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Right?
SPEAKER_04It's a matter of cooling them down and presenting them and giving some juzge to it. Yes. Uh but that requires a more um, dare I say, feminine eye. Yes. Feminine gaze. Yes. So, you know, I think uh the ratio in San Francisco may or may not change. It's not for me to say, but I think that the path to changing it is that path.
SPEAKER_02Right, it's just like it's like like putting I mean, kind of kind of getting back to Jason Switter, putting like 30 seconds more thought into it. Like maybe, maybe what the girlies might want, maybe what maybe the girlies want to just dance a little bit. Um, but it's also yeah, it's it's it's it's kind of tough, right? Because like you said, yeah, male-dominated field. Um, I mean you guys are spending a bunch of time in like LA, New York City, all those sorts of things, right? Kind of makes sense. Kind of makes sense. Now, Matt, I bet you see it things differently. You're working for a software company.
SPEAKER_01No, actually, that's a very good answer from Zach. I think you know, like the art of the party is you want your guests to be as comfortable as possible. And so you have to have a very like high attention to detail for like the way people would experience an event because you're curating an experience for people. Um, much like developer experience where you want to make uh the process of using software uh as easy as possible. Good experience. I thought I was good at that. I I love experiences. Developers, parties, it's just all about the experience. No, but that's I think that's spot on. Though I will say I think the ratios are getting better. That's my hot take. Um also an aside, kind of crazy. I went to two Series C launch parties both at the Legion of Honor in the last week. Insane. Yes. And I won't say anything about ratios at events because again, I have a job and I can't get cancelled, but I think there are more people coming into the city that are a bit livelier and it's um much more even distribution. Totally, totally. Well, one was the Exo event, right? The Exo event, shout out the Exit team, hell of a party.
SPEAKER_02Second was Modal, shout out Modal team, hell of a party. Totally, and they both did it at the Legion of Honor, they both did it at Series C. I also remember when they both did their Series B parties around the same time as well. Good for them. Good for them. Lots of money.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I mean I, you know, I saw I saw pictures coming out of, you know, from both both of them. It seemed like the ratio was pretty damn good. Maybe, maybe, I I wonder if there is like a, you know, the the the migration from New York City. Right? I mean, I mean, maybe, maybe Corgi's doing all the work, right? They're just like they're just like importing all of the marketing girls. They got that bus.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01This is driving them in, bro. It's a long drive. That's why it's so happening so slow.
SPEAKER_02Takes time. Actually, on this, uh it's one wasn't built in a day.
SPEAKER_00Rome wasn't built in a day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, insurance tech wasn't built in a day. Insurance tech distribution wasn't built in a day. I mean, I I there was one that I there was one Is that a quote from the actual tweet?
SPEAKER_01Did he actually say that? I I don't know. That actually I think there might be a Twitter beef where something similar was said. Really? Yeah, about about insurance tech. You'll have to dig that up and post it.
SPEAKER_02I will I will I'll do my research.
SPEAKER_01There's a corgi linear beef that you would should look into. A layer.
SPEAKER_02Excellent.
SPEAKER_01Excellent.
SPEAKER_02And you know, if it causes any drama, blame my ass. Please, please. Um my legal team can handle it. Uh ChatGPT. So basically, I will There was one event that I missed, right? In the types of events, since I missed it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Did we see the the the
@useCorgi fashion show
SPEAKER_02fucking corgi fashion show in Claude Lane? I did, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Who is this? He's jacked. He actually looks pretty good, isn't he?
SPEAKER_01Influencer guy? He looks kind of like the he looks like the, you know, the the dude, the my Tex Eel.
SPEAKER_02Is it him? I don't think it's him.
SPEAKER_01I don't think it is, but it looks like my decent. Okay. Yeah, no, this guy's this guy looks good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, you know. Straight. I think all of us are, just, you know, just in case. Um, but yeah, like, as men do.
SPEAKER_01You think we do this for comments from women? Absolutely not. We lost the women in the first 20 seconds of this show. None of them are listening now anyway. This is for the guys on the bench talking about this guy's arms.
SPEAKER_02Of course. We haven't even talked about the fucking event. We haven't talked about that this is that this is an insurance tech startup hosting a fashion show in a lane called Clawed Lane. That sentence would like decimate an entire family from the Victorian era. Yeah, it would. Like they would explode. They would explode. None of these words were in the Quran. Sorry, it's it's usually it's usually the other book. Um, but yeah, I you know, so I have thoughts on this, and I'll I will actually be a little bit more pointed. You guys don't have to be. You don't have to follow my lead. You don't even have to comment on what I'm about to say. Um this it feels a bit strange. That's all I'm gonna say. It feels a bit strange for uh uh an insurance company, because they are an insurance company, to be doing distribution this way. That's all I'll say. That's all I'll say. I'm not it's like I like the people at Corgi, I have no issue with them at all. It just this just feels a bit strange. That's all I'm that's all I'm saying. We're good to move on.
SPEAKER_01I like the mascot, I like the bus. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02How do you have you frequently coffee shop? Um I walk past it all the time, actually. I walk up Bush Street. I've not been in. I've not been in, no. So I I I withhold judgment on the establishment. In terms of it, you know, in terms of distribution, it's doing a great job. It's doing a great job. Um and so you gotta you gotta hand it to them. You gotta hand it to them, you gotta give them a hand.
SPEAKER_04I think that it makes sense, right? Like this is uh you have to build, I think we're we're trying to do something similar with Ford. It's like we we look at Corey Cafe as a very good example of how to make people give a shit about your product at the end of the day, because that that is what it is. And uh and we might be uh opening a Ford-esque thing.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_04Tb TBD.
SPEAKER_02And and you know, if I have any idea as to what that might be, all I would say is that I I bet it's slightly more related to what your product actually is.
SPEAKER_04It might be. Yeah, yeah. And I'm saying that. I'm saying that. Coffee relates to insurance in some abstract way, I'm sure. Yeah. You need a lot of coffee to do insurance.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean to to to properly underwrite, I mean, that's a that's a hard job. That's a hard job. It's a serious job. That's all I'll say. It's a very serious job. Shout out to actuaries. Yes, they're doing the real work. The real ones. Yeah. Underappreciated in this economy. 100 P. Yes. Okay. Moving on. Move on. So um just I think I think before we wrap, before we wrap, um, because we were talking about tech event ratios, got sidetracked because I missed a tweet, um, but I want to get into a couple of the comments, right, on tech event, uh startup event ratios that we can react to here before we finish off. Uh and so Celeste, once again, so Celeste is a friend of the show. She says,
Another Celeste reaction
SPEAKER_02uh, this is back in May, she was like, there are women in SF. There are just not as many at the events men in tech keep showing up to. Almost every social event here is also a networking event, and networking in SF means engineering, venture, and founders. The men complaining about the ratio picked the rooms. I've been saying this. This is true. They've been saying this. They've been saying this.
SPEAKER_04If you if you want more women at your events, you gotta pick good couches and pick good drinks and pick good music and pick good lighting. Yeah. These details matter.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Although, okay, here's maybe a counterpoint. I think, because I've done this both ways, like I've thrown events that have a logo attached to that event, and I've thrown events that are just like, hey, everybody come to my house and let's hang out. Um and I think as soon as you put a logo, and this goes back to what you said, Jayden, about like venture-backed startup-funded stuff, as soon as it's like labeled AI or tech, I think that just rules out an entire audience. So it's like that's no longer interesting to a certain crowd. And I, you know, I r I hear you. I respect that. Because I don't necessarily want to I love talking to people about building stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But at a certain point when people walk up to you and go, what are you building? Like I'm like, okay, I think I'm gonna go to the next thing, you know, right? Like, let's even if I'm out of tech event, let's just like talk about something fun, you know. Yeah, so I almost feel like the logo kind of dooms your event from the start if you're trying to look for this sort of thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know for um for for Mott's Halloween, not Mott not Mott's Halloween, I I bankrolled uh actually Miranda and I bankrolled that. Um but for uh for Mott's Valentine's Day, right, right, when I did it with Zoe, shout out Zoe. Shout out Zo. Um, yeah, that was that was a fine line that we had to that we had to run, or whatever the fucking saying is, I don't know. I'm losing my mind. Basically, um it was, yeah, we wanted to try and balance, like, okay, cool, how do we how do we get Zoe involved, right? Because they're gonna help bankroll the thing. Uh, but also how do we make it so that everybody comes and doesn't feel like it's a tech event in any way, shape, or form. Right. Uh I found that to be kind of stressful. That's all I'll say. That's all I'll say.
SPEAKER_04Well it's it's the it's the uh the art of great advertising. Oh yeah. It can't be right, you know, you can't just slap a logo right on the party floor. Yes. You have to have thematic events that might point to or suggest the the bankroll E. Yep. But it can't
Luma is dead
SPEAKER_04be a direct, you know, you gotta mix it in artfully.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you're not half it you're not gonna harvest emails.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_02Like a lot of Luma events do, and then you're just on like forever email lists. You know, it's actually why I I that's actually why I put the jazz recital on Partiful and not Luma. Even though Luma is sort of, you know, I think of Luma as more corporate, right? I mean a lot of the startup events are gonna choose Luma, it feels more corporate, it feels more done up. But the reason I used Partiful over Luma for a you know nice event where people dressed up, you know, did like you know something, something cool, uh, was because I just think Luma has just got such a bad rap now because it's just known for fucking email lists. Yeah, that is. And just like spamming your email. Like it's very annoying. Like I block all of them now. I do too. Very annoying. So there's there's probably a there's a there's a uh subject for another day, Partiful versus Luma, because that keeps evolving in San Francisco culture as well. Uh last couple of tweets
@sonofalli reaction
SPEAKER_02here wanted to bring up from uh friend of the show, son of Allie. And she says, How men look at you at tech events.
SPEAKER_04From backrooms, that's fine. Scary.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so so it is the guy from Backrooms. You can see why she was in the comedy show. Uh she's a uh legendary poster, legendary
@signulll reaction
SPEAKER_02poster. And last but not least, I wanted to bring up. I just thought it was just funny to bring this tweet up. I can't see the tweet, I only see the user profile image, and it's like I know what this is gonna be hilarious. I realized I do not enjoy going to any tech events whatsoever. Fair. Thanks for that, signal. Shout out signal. True signal over noise. Yeah. So there you go. Um uh that's fuck. Do I have anything else? Uh well, we've we've kind of touched on novelty, right? The idea of novelty. Uh I think that's pretty self-explanatory. I think a lot of the events that we've kind of gone over have been relatively novel, actually, which is kind of cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_01I have I've been having fun. And I mean, you know what I would say to the six men that are probably still viewing this podcast by now? I would say if you're trying if you're trying to meet your wife, don't go to tech events. Go to the marina, go to bar darling, go play some pool, just go hang out and be a normal person. That's what I gotta say to the beginning. It seems like you're speaking from some experience here. It's like a very specific scenario. No, I don't know what you're talking about. That is just I'm just good on the fly like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, that's what's why I got you on the show. You can find me at Bar Darling. You can find me playing pool. I don't know anything about that.
SPEAKER_02Um I guess I guess to close, and you know, we can sort of make this uh well however we want, actually. I mean I was gonna put a format to it, but fuck that. But basically, any thoughts on where these events are going for the rest of the big two six? Do we have like any any sort of thoughts, like any any trends that we are noticing, any behaviors we are noticing at events that are perhaps changing?
SPEAKER_04I'm seeing merch get a lot cooler. Yes, actually. I like that direction. I think people are going. I maybe it's be maybe it's my consumer electronics tilts, but I feel like people are incorporating much more of their product in the merch, uh, which is an interesting direction that I love to see. Yeah. Um what are your thoughts, Matt?
SPEAKER_01I also think merch is getting cooler, and it's one of those things where it's like if you take like an hour and like think about something really cool and how you can chain things together, you can do better than like a hat. I'm sorry, the hats are going in the trash. Like, I I don't I have too many hats, I have too many t-shirts.
SPEAKER_04You have one head.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I only have this guy. Uh I do think I would make a prediction that as long as we continue to see capital inflows into the uh startup space, we'll continue to see crazier and crazier parties. Legion of Honor, extremely well done, both parties. Um I also see like museums kind of on the come-up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I'm always down to go look at Smart in the evening.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it seems that the Legion of Honor has overtaken the San Francisco mint in terms of being the sort of like Series B plus startup event location.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02That's all I'm gonna say. I mean, but yeah, do what you want with that information. I don't know what you'd actually do with that information, but it's just it's just I'm just noticing things. Just noticing. All the Series C founders that are like, hmm, yes, don't see. We're going pretty niche here on our mods. Uh that is that is how it is. But yeah, I think that's actually I think it's a pretty decent, decent place to wrap, I would say. So, you've been listening to another episode of Members of Technical Staff. We'll go ahead and see you on the timeline again real soon.
